easyJet – Manchester – 2012

On January 27th, 2012, an Easyjet Airbus A320-200, registration G-EZUI performing flight U2-1946 from Athens (Greece) to Manchester,EN (UK), was on final approach to Manchester’s runway 23R descending through about 1300 feet when a lightning struck the aircraft. The crew went around and entered a holding at 4000 feet to run checklists, then had to wait until snow removal on the runways was complete before landing safely on runway 23R about 25 minutes after aborting the first approach.

Ryanair – Malmo – 2012

On January 19th, 2012, a Ryanair Boeing 737-800, registration EI-DAK performing flight FR-258 from London Stansted,EN (UK) to Malmo (Sweden), was on approach to Malmo when the aircraft received a lightning strike. The crew continued for a safe landing on Malmo’s runway 17.

Vueling – Vienna – 2011

Monday, May 9hr, a Vueling Airbus A320-200, registration EC-HQJ performing flight VY-8710 from Barcelona,SP (Spain) to Vienna (Austria), was holding at 6000 feet over Lake Neusiedl about 25nm south of Vienna Airport when the aircraft was struck by two lightnings. The crew subsequently continued for a safe landing on Vienna’s runway 11 at 13:50L (11:50Z). According to lightning recordings only two lightings were registered in the region at the time of the incident.
